UK scientists have discovered that particular areas
of the brain are linked to both dementia and schizophrenia. These areas control
'high order' information from the senses. Interestingly these regions are both
the last to fully develop (during adolescence), and the first to degenerate
during ageing.
Professor Hugh Perry of the MRC commented,
"It
raises important issues about possible genetic and environmental factors that
may occur in early life and then have lifelong consequences. The more we can
find out about these very difficult disorders, the closer we will come to
helping sufferers and their families."
